Last but not least for November is "Misery" by Stephen King.
I first read this book about 15 years ago. This is one of my favourite
Stephen King novels, and truly scared my silly!
I'm usually one of those people that prefers to read the book before I see the movie and this was no exception. Actually, I'm gald about that
fact, albeit the movie did put me off Kathy Bates for quite some time - her portrayal of the nurse was just fiendish!
The book tells the story of a writer who becomes stranded after a car
accident. He finds himself rescued by a nurse who claims to be his biggest fan, but the nurse isn't happy eith him as he has just killed off her favourite book character "Misery". She holds him hostage (under the pretext of helping him recover from the
accident) and forces him to write a new novel, bringing the character back to life. Her methods of encouragement are truly horrifying and in true Stephen King fashion.
This book is a
great read as long as you are not reading it alone at night! (yes that is the scaredy cat in me talking!)
Normally, I disagree with spoilers, but let me just say this, you think the nurse
is bad enough in the movie? Well she is a lot worse in the book!
I give "Misery" a 4 book rating - I really like the book, and just as soon as I pluck up the courage again, I'll re read it!
